They will likely gauge players reactions on items, drop rates, looting systems, and the like to make final decisions of what players like.
The one thing I do think will happen if they have enough players, is if they update the game they will likely use D2R as a testing play pen for some stuff they see in D4. Like I have said elsewhere the issue is too many of you guys are treating it as if it was intended to be some stand alone launch. It is very apparent the release of D3 has created a huge rift in the Diablo community and D2R seems mostly to be stage one of repairing that. This game is not meant to compete with the current games out. I am sure that in executive meetings, WoW Classic and it’s effect on late BFA and Shadowlands launch sales have been referenced many times as an example of how D2R can help D4 sales.Ī large majority of what was done in D2R like many have stated here is to sell D4. In playing Classic, they become re-invested and so it helped sales for Shadowlands. WoW Classic is a great example of this strategy, because it brought back many players who had retired from the retail game. With a surge of players returning to Diablo through D2R, they expect a good number of them to become more interested in D4. They know that a good remaster can bring in some quick dough too so that justifies it further.ĭiablo 4 will have the intention of attracting the mass market, like all of Blizzard’s modern game releases. In Activision/Blizzard’s eyes, I am willing to bet that D2R is viewed to them as a goodwill and fan-loyalty-building project more than anything. Diablo 2 is already a successful game and D2R will do great as long as they don’t make fans unhappy.
They certainly have a good monetary investment in D2R, but you can be sure that Diablo 4’s budget dwarfs it and it is critical to them that D4 succeeds. Blizzard knows that if fans don’t have faith in the franchise, D4 might not sell as well as they hope. Diablo 3 is still popular, but many fans regard it as a failure, at least in terms of its design or faithfulness to what the true Diablo of old (Blizzard North’s vision) was. The intention is to get more people interested in the future of the franchise, i.e. A good D2 remaster will restore much fan loyalty and bring people back to Blizzard. Making good on D2R is extremely important of course and they understand that. They want a game that appeals to not only those 40k-50k but a whole new world of gamers and streamers.Īctually I believe their primary strategy for D2R is to bring people back to the franchise, and build Diablo-franchise hype and loyalty for future releases. Why do people think Blizzard is spending literally millions of dollars to remaster D2R for a new generation only to keep it exactly the same for eternity for what 40k or 50k people?
